�Call for national research study to investigate the causes of oesophageal cancer
The Barrett's Oesophagus Foundation would like to support the Chief Medical Officer's recommendation for a large scale national enquiry study to investigate the risk factors associated with the rising rate of cancer of the gullet. This was included in his Annual Report published yesterday, which raised grave concern all over the sharp rise in oesophageal (gullet) cancer over the final two decades.
Barrett's Oesophagus is a condition which occurs in patients with a long history of heartburn and acid reflux. People with Barrett's esophagus are up to 125 times more likely to develop cancer of the oesophagus than the ordinary person. The Barrett's Oesophagus Foundation is the entirely charity dedicated to the prevention of cancer from this condition.
Sir Liam Donaldson's early recommendations include better educational programmes to improve world awareness of the symptoms of oesophageal cancer and research into better symptomatic techniques.
Dr Rebecca Fitzgerald, Trustee of Barrett's Oesophagus Foundation and an technical on malignant neoplastic disease of the oesophagus, says: "Further inquiry and greater awareness could save many lives. We hope that Sir Liam's recommendations ar taken severely."
Oesophageal crab is the sixth to the highest degree common cause of cancer deaths in England and Wales and kills over 6,000 people a year. New 9/11 Book Inspires New York Musician
NEW YORK, Aug. 14 -- Days after the Twin Towers fell,
thousands of first responders aided New York in its devastating crisis,
giving Americans a great sense of hope. Seven years by and by, many of these
heroes have been forgotten - and worsened, over 15,000 have become gravely
ill.
Steven Centore, source of the new book One of Them: A First Responder's

Spinetta -- wide call Luis Alberto Spinetta -- is one of the nigh pregnant and influential figures in the development of sway music in Argentina. Lamas Daughter Splits From Bachelor Fiance
The eldest daughter of U.S. soap actor LORENZO LAMAS has ditched her wedding plans after splitting from her reality star fiance MATT GRANT.
British stockbroker Grant appeared on U.S. TV show The Bachelor: London Calling and chose budding actress Shayne Lamas to be his bride after a six-week dating game. The series ended in May (08) with a televised proposal.
However, the couple has now put an end to their rocky and short-lived relationship.
In a roast statement to People.com, they say, "We tried hard to make it work but we realised that we were both gallery in different directions.
"We truly care about each other and testament remain close friends."

George Clooney - Clooneys Ex Lands Top Modelling Job With Audigier
GEORGE CLOONEY's ex-girlfriend SARAH LARSON is enjoying a career boost after her high-profile romance with the Hollywood actor - she's been named the face of fashion designer CHRISTIAN AUDIGIER's new line.
The model and former waitress is alleged to have been dumped by Clooney in May (08), although neither party has officially confirmed the split.
But Larson has now landed a deal with Audigier's fashion firm to front a new line of couture dresses.
Audigier tells People.com, "She is a fresh, elegant and classy girl. I saw her on a red carpet and liked her style and European look."
Larson's agent, Kenya Knight, adds, "Sarah was picked by Christian Audigier because she looks fabulous in everything she wears."
Larson had her first fitting for the range on Thursday (12Jun08) in Los Angeles, and she had a photo shoot for the advertising campaign on Friday (13Jun08).
The ads will be unveiled later this month (Jun08).

Film chronicles video store demise caused by 'Temptation'
Next month, independent DVD supplier Vanguard Cinema will ship to video retailers a movie about a video retailer.
If you're thinking it's a "Clerks" clone, forget it. "Heart of the Beholder," which is being released directly to video on June 24, tells the true story of pioneering video retailer Ken Tipton, who lost the Video Library chain he had founded and built up after battling religious extremists in St. Louis, Mo., over his decision to carry Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ."
The independent film, 12 years in the making, was written and directed by Tipton, who in 1981 pooled his savings and with his pregnant wife opened Video Library as the first video rental store in St. Louis. The store was an instant success and soon grew into a multimillion-dollar business, with six stores twice the size of the average Blockbuster and another six Movie Machine video kiosks.
But with success came attention from the St. Louis chapter of the Rev. Donald Wildmon's National Federation for Decency. The NFD insisted that Video Library remove films they deemed obscene, from "Blazing Saddles" to "Splash," the latter drawing their ire because they felt Tom Hanks making love to a mermaid promoted bestiality.
When Scorsese's "Temptation" was released on video in 1989, Video Library was the only video chain in St. Louis to offer it for rent. The NFD picketed Video Library stores, and the Tiptons received death threats. The local prosecuting attorney filed obscenity charges against the retailers, and while they ultimately prevailed in court, the negative publicity and legal fees bankrupted their business and led to the breakup of their family.
Tipton was compelled to make a film about his story after being approached by a producer for a possible telefilm in 1993. The networks liked the idea but deemed it too controversial. Tipton persisted, ultimately teaming with television standards and practices executive Darlene Lieblich, who optioned the story and raised $500,000 to make the film, which was shot in 18 days in the spring of 2004. Postproduction was completed in April 2005. A short time later, "Heart of the Beholder" was screened at the 2005 St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, where it was awarded the Critics Choice Award for best narrative feature film.
Freyr Thor, president of Vanguard Cinema, read about the film online and contacted Tipton and his team -- who coincidentally had just sent Vanguard, which specializes in independent cinema, a copy of the film for submission.
"The film is a perfect fit for us," Thor said. "We have never shied away from controversy, and this film is unique because it depicts an era when video stores were the new frontier of media delivery to the public. That's why they became the flash point of controversy over free speech."
As an independent video distributor, Thor said, "We always look for films consistent with our mission to promote new talent in cinema, and films with subjects of importance to our current world. We look for consistency in production qualities and we look for stars and critical acclaim. This one stood out because of its story line, derived from video industry history. We were aware of the film for a while, and knew it had met with some resistance due to its subject."
Although the movie is a testament to his convictions, Tipton concedes that if he had it to all over again, he would have done things differently.
"I would have removed 'The Last Temptation' after the NFD demanded I do so," he said. "It's one thing to stand up for yourself, but my actions affected my family and my employees, many of whom went bankrupt, just as we did.
" 'The Last Temptation of Christ' was a good movie, but not good enough to justify the crap my family and employees went through. Ask Scorsese if he would make 'The Last Temptation' now, knowing the brutal harassment his family and many others went through. My gut says he would pass on it, also."
In his new role as a filmmaker, Tipton is already planning a follow-up: a sequel to "Heart of the Beholder" that chronicles "all the strange things we went through to make (the movie)."

Mumbai (ANI): Pakistani band 'Azal' launched its music album 'Road to Infinity' in Mumbai. The Karachi based band launched the album amid much fan fare on Monday. Its debut single 'Aisi Taisi' was a major hit across Pakistan. British pop sensation Hard core released the CD's of the Pakistani band. While sound of the band is edgy and rocky, melodies remain its mainstay. Sameer, a member of the band said: "Our music is all about song and sound of the soil.
